Our Opening Sequence, Production Log

Day 1 (4th Feb.)

We did a lot of filming on this day, but when it came to capturing, the only footage we have found was that of an establishing shot of the school, Paddington Academy. We captured this and edited it whilst using garage band to put audio onto it. But it seems that we may have recorded over the tape or lost the footage further on in the tape, this puts us at a disadvantage and in a bad situation as we worked so hard to shoot such amazing footage & for it to have been lost. None of us are to blame and it was an accident waiting to happen, we will overcome this.

Day 2 (12th March.)


We shot four and a half minutes of filming, and here we shot most if not all of the dream scene, it went rather well considering our minor set back prior to this.

Adnan shot the scenes from when he literally go up and out of bed in the morning, (verisimilitude purposes) he shot a whopping 35mins worth of footage which we edited on a later date.

We set the scene for the reality sequence. We shot 15mins worth of shots, which meant that we have now finished filming, lets hope all of the work has paid off. We will begin editing today by the earliest, because of the disadvantage we occurred earlier on in the project.

Our Opening Sequence,Editing Diary:

Day 1 ( 11th March 2010)

We were faced with a problem on this date, the problem was that all of our previous recordings were erased or lost further on in the tape, this put us at a disadvantage because we have lost our footage therefore we have had to reschedule and re-film the scenes, this has put us in a very bad position, as we may have to face the fact that we will be behind, therefore meaning that everything may end up being done past the due date but we will do everything in our power to finish on time...

Day 2 (15th March.)


Following our big setback, we managed to finish all of the filming in a space of 3-4 days, and then we were ready to capture and upload whilst editing.(TO BE CONTINUED)

LS- Barry is walking through the school corridors, all the girls are watching him go past. He feels like a ladies-man.

Looking good. Until, he trips up in front of everyone forcing him to be drawn back to reality. His alarm starts to ring.

Int. Barry’s House, a cold morning
(Alarm sounds)

CU- Barry yawns, his eyes slowly opening, as he still feels tired. He turns off the alarm, then stretches and gets ready.

Barry gets out of bed.

CU- Barry’s slippers as he puts his feet into them.

This is the Logo we used, it represents a dreamy sequence and a very loving atmosphere is released in the audience as they see this, the blue, white and red colours suggest peace and calmness, the blue represents the stars which symbolizes a dream and romance. It's very tranquil this is what a romantic comedy is about... This was drawn by Adnan and scanned onto the computer.

Location: Adnan's House & The School (Paddington Academy)

Outline of the plot: The film's opening sequence begins with a scene where the character is in a dream sequence. It starts off well but ends in him falling, this forces him to wake up and face reality.
Then he gets ready for school, which is mostly filmed in the bathroom (Adnan's house)
He then begins the journey to school... When he arrives at his destination (Paddington Academy) he realizes nothing has changed, as he still gets bullied, until he sees the girl of his dreams, walking through the corridor. If we had time to film the whole film, we will see (Barry - the main character)having a relationship with the girl of his dreams (Becky - Miami) as she realizes that her ex boyfriend ( - Ali) was not the person she thought he was, but all of this could not have happened without Barry's true friend Ziad - Ziad)


Brief synopsis: An unpopular boy falls for a girl which is already in a relationship. In the dream sequence he dreams about her and all the girls liking his new and improved 'look' but then he trips over, that's when he wakes up...

Target Audience: Teenagers/Young Adults. Ages between 12/13 and 18 because it's a romantic comedy which is suitable for their age group. We chose the certificate 12A as stated below because it fits in perfectly with our film, due to the known fact that most rom-coms (romantic- comedies) are certified as 12A.

CBBFC Guidelines State:
Theme: Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.
Language: The use of strong language (e.g. 'f***') must be infrequent. Racist abuse is also of particular concern.
Sex: Sexual activity may be implied. Sex references may reflect what is likely to be familiar to most adolescents but should not go beyond what is suitable for them.
Violence: Violence must not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated.

Costumes: Need to be in business dress because most of the scenes set in Paddington Academy school (Sixth form) But there will be exceptions such as pajamas worn when character wakes up (Adnan's house) and casual clothing worn elsewhere.

Soundtrack: Is going to be created using garage-band it will be a nice and happy but slow beat to ensure the audience feel as though they are watching a romantic comedy.

Analysis: Juno

We analyzed the opening sequence of Juno (Directed by: Jason Reitman, in the year of 2008.)

We could not find any opening sequences for Juno on you-tube so we had to refer to:
www.watch-movies.net where we got the following full film sequence. But we did not analyze the whole thing.

The film sequence begins with an establishing long-shot of Juno standing outside someone’s home. This is used to introduce the audience to where the film’s surroundings are. The director used this in order to show the main location and character in the film itself. The proxemics gives the audience the impression, which is that she, is not very close to the person that lives there, because she stands well away staring in that direction. Shortly after we see a long shot of her drinking from an orange juice bottle. The way in which she is drinking from the bottle, proves to the audience that she is very immature and lost, as she continues to stare at this house which lies before her. Then, we see a close up shot of the main character Juno staring with what seems to be fear, in the direction of the camera lens, we then realize she was still staring at someone’s home. We then realize it’s her boyfriend’s home, as she is then seen about to have sexual intercourse it is visible to the audience when we see her taking off her knickers as he (boyfriend) lies back on the sofa awaiting her. Later we see an extreme close up of her lips touching his face, this is a very explicit scene as the audience automatically realize that they are doing something they really shouldn’t be at that age.

The music which introduces the opening sequences is a song which was sung by Kimya Dawson. This song helps establish the genre and the type of atmosphere the film creates, it may also be to raise awareness for the US independent – where in which the film was and still is marketed in a successful way. The downbeat love song helps us see the type of character Juno is, this portrays her as innocent and thoughtful, it also reflects the type of film it is for instance, it’s a coming of age story that follows a girl which is on a quest for romance.

Juno is pictured walking through a suburban state in USA, they typical type of village houses with mail boxes standing outside the front porch, all of this works to set up her small world which sets the scene for the opening sequence. We see a pharmacy, a park which she walks through, a few newsagents and what’s called a ‘guitar shack;’ these entirely make up the typical setting of a village. All of this is to show verisimilitude. Soon after we see Juno walking on a path filled with leaves crushed on the floor, and others falling onto the floor, this shows the type of season the crew are filming in ‘fall/autumn’– this will paramount to the film because it links to the fact that Juno gets pregnant later on in the plot.

Juno’s costume is an American style of unisex teen uniform this consists of, normal jeans, a sweatshirt and converse shoes, thus indicating to the audience that she is a bit of a tomboy. The college’ group that are pictured running through the beginning and end of the opening sequence further suggests the type of cliques that USA has, in the world of a teenager and this contradicts Juno as she is seen a ‘loner’ which only has a couple of friends which when in proxemics, the audience feels as though they are not close friends of hers.

Analysis: High School Musical 3

Troy and the gang of East High School are going through their senior year, facing graduating and going their separate ways. Coming to terms with the reality of it all, Troy wants to attend the nearby University of New Mexico next year on a basketball scholarship, but Gabriella wants to attend Julliard School of Arts in New York to set her sights on becoming an artist. Meanwhile, Sharpay, the school's shallow and spoiled rich girl, plots to go all out planning the school's final musical show with the idea to add music to her hopes and fears about the future. While Sharpay takes an up-and-coming British exchange student under her wing, her flamboyant fraternal twin brother, Ryan, has his sights set on something different after school. In addition, Troy's best friend and basketball teammate Chad, and Garbiella's best friend Taylor, all have their sights set on their plans after high school and come to terms with the reality of the real world.

I analysed this extract in terms of camera shots, angles and composition, Mise-en-scene, Sound & Lighting...




This extract opens with a very close up of a young teenage boy looking tired and out of breath, making the audience more alert as they need to keep up with the action in the movie. It then pans and focus pulls to a close up of a shot clock which is winding down from about 18 seconds, showing that there is obviously a match being played and time is running out. After the clock had reached zero, there was a long shot of the audience cheering on the better team in the half then suddenly jump cuts to yet another long shot of the opposite teams fans keeping their heads down looking frustrated, this creates the tension between the two teams. There is a tracking long shot of the main team walking through the corridor and into the changing room; almost all of the players have a towel over their head while walking slowly. I liked this shot because it made me feel like all hope was lost for this team and that there was no way of going back into the game and winning.

It is soon apparent that the location of this scene is a basketball stadium. The stands are full of people cheering and supporting their team, cheerleaders dancing on the side line, referees, etc. As the game is going on we keep seeing shots of the coach getting more and more frustrated at what is going on, on the court. This all creates verisimilitude as this is what would actually happen in a real basketball game.

There was a variety of different costumes used in this opening sequence. Starting off with a traditional basketball wear for the players which involves trainers, shorts and a jersey. The coaches and judges are all dressed very formal in business dress showing importance and a higher status in the sequence.

The lighting used in the scene is quite bright at centre court but less bright as you look deeper into the crowd. This shows that all the action is happening at centre court and the viewer isn't distracted too much by the screaming and shouting crowd. However there was a clever type of lighting used in the audience that caught my eye; this was the flashing of cameras, it really made the scene more lively and realistic as it is something we would all do at an exciting event.

The props that were used; a basketball, towels, cheer leading poms, judges table, seats etc. These props were all used to put the scene together as it will look unrealistic without them.

*Fast paced music when they return to the second half of the game, not a normal soundtrack the team is singing this as they play the rest of the game.

High School Musical 3 was a good movie for me to analyze as it has targeted our age band, so i was able to relate to it although it isn't our choice of a romantic comedy. This kind of movie would not work for us as we are not doing a musical, we are doing more of the traditional romantic comedy.

A Cinderella Story

A Cinderella story is a teenage romantic comedy and is about a girl Sam Montgomery who is not so popular at her high school. After her fathers death and not having a will left to her, her evil step mum gets everything that her father left behind and makes Sam do everything at her dad's diner. At her school she is shunned by the popular stuck up girls, the main one being Shelby Cummings, a very wealthy, spoiled person. Austin Ames and Sam interact with each other through emails and text messages and do this without any idea of who they are communicating with. They decide to meet at the school dance on the dance floor at 11 o'clock but their time together is cut short when Sam has to race back to the diner. As she is running out she leaves her mobile phone behind with Austin finding it. To this Austin tries to find out who Cinderella is and Sam is afraid that if he finds out who she really is he may not want anything to do with her. And may even forget about their on going relationship.

I analysed this extract in terms of camera shots, angles and composition, Mise-en-scene, Sound & Lighting.



In this extract we start off with an establishing shot of a castle. The castle is big and beautiful and has been used to give audiences an impression that the movie is going to be based about something magical and is probably going to be a happy story.

We also see a two shot of a father and his daughter, with the daughter holding a snow globe , I think they used this shot to show how close the daughter and the Father are and how he spends a lot of his time with her. One possible effect for the audience is that it makes them feel happy and puts them in a good mood as they love to see a father and a daughter bonding together. Another shot which shows the daughter and her father close is the mid shot of the father lifting her up and playing with her. This is very good evidence of how close they are as he is lifting her up with happiness and is extremely joyful himself. This again creates an effect for the audience as it makes them feel pleased and excited. There is also and additional shot which shows how close the father and daughter are and this is a long shot which is shot behind a window, the shot shows the father reading a bedtime story to his daughter. This is a beautiful shot as it shows the brilliant bond between the two and shows how much they love each other.

The location seems to be San Fernando Valley as she states this in the extract. There are many mini scenes in this extract where there is voice over of girl talking an explaining her life. The first scene is when the daughter and the father are sitting on the car, this again shows the relationship as they love to have fun together. Another scene is the father and daughter playing baseball, this again shows the relationship between the father and daughter as it shows how they like to spend there time together and love to have fun together, this presents verisimilitude as it shows the reality of a father and daughter relationship. Finally there’s a scene in the cafeteria of the daughter having her birthday and shows how everyone loves the girl not only her father.

The costumes used are casual clothing as the father and daughter are mostly based outside so therefore this creates verisimilitude as it shows that reality of how people dress outside and if you’re going to have fun.

The props used are snow globe, baseball glove, baseball bat, birthday cake, candles. Also there is a big sign to show that there is a restaurant and that it is open.The director used this mise en scene to show the audience what the film is going to be about.

Lighting:
• Very bright, natural lights and makes audience feel like the film is going to be based about happiness.

Diegetic sound:
• Girl talking when the camera is moving around the mountains
• Car alarm
• Voice over of character talking about her life, and includes where she lives and also talks about her father
• Sound of bat making sound when the girl swings for the ball
• People telling the girl to make a wish in the restaurant

Non diegetic sound:
• Opening credits begins with a refreshing, mysterious music which makes the audience think that the story is going to be about something magical
• Music goes louder and switches to the girl and her father
• Drumming and clapping music comes on when they are playing together, shows verisimilitude as the music is happy and suits the scene as it shows the daughter and father playing together
• Song changes when the father holds the women to emphasise to the audience an impression that the women might be evil as the music is loud

Analysis: 10 Things I Hate About You

i am going to be analysing the first 2minutes of the opening sequence of the movie "10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU". i m going to be analysing the mise en scene, camera shot angles, and composition, and i am also going to analyse the editing in the opening sequence.



in the opening sequence we start of by witnessing a sketch being drawn. However the editing is very fast and this makes the sketch finish quite quickly. The sketch represents childhood because it looks like it was made with crayons. this is used to reflect the personality of teenagers. the music is really upbeat and this makes the sketch seem very interesting and this also gets the audience excited, anxious and desperate to know what the movie is about. we then witness a transition from the sketch onto an establishing shot of the city that was drawn in the sketch. this effect makes the movie seem very lively and exciting.

the font of the title looks like its been made by doodling on paper. this shows that the characters in the film are based in high school. to show the city that they are living in the director chooses to use panning and also because he wanted to show the names of the actors and he though that the city would be a great background to be used. Both the music and the panning continues and we see a normal environment in which the people are living in.

the director then focuses on a blue car and it turns out that the music we were hearing in the background is diagetic because the teenage girls in the blue car are also listening to that same song. we then feel that the camera is moving away from the blue car and while the tracking is happening the happy cheerful music that the girls in the blue car are listening to starts fading away and a different song starts taking over. Then the camera focuses on a red car and there is a girl driving that car. The different song that comes on is also diagetic and it is coming from the stereo of the red car. this change in sound shows the different personalities of the teenagers. the girls in the blue car are happy and fun and they look like they care about their reputation, however the girl in the red car looks like she doesnt even care about what people think of her the music tat she is listening to also suggests that she doesnt care about her reputation the lyrics of the song quotes "i dont give a damn about reputation".
we then get a cut and then we see hockey sticks being held by teenagers and they re playing with a ball in a very tight space. we then start moving into a high angle shot and this shots shows the students that attend this school. we then see a long shot or an establishing shot of the school and its structure, this shot was chosen by the director because he wanted to show e audience were these teenagers are at.

we then see a mid shot of the girl that was listening to that rebellious song in her car and this shot suggests to the audience tht she is the main character. we then see a close up of the name of the "guidance counselor" this shot also makes the audience get the impression that this counselor has a big role in this movie. we then cut on to a male teenagers face and this also suggests that he might be in trouble because he is in the counselors office. this shot also suggests that this boy has an important role in this movie.

Analysis: Never Been Kissed

Never been kissed, is a teenage romantic comedy film based around a girl in her early twenties which works as a reporter for a newspaper article called Chicago Daily. One of her tasks was to do a column on what the cool high-school youths are doing. The only way she can find out is if she goes undercover, as a student herself, this is good in a way that she got to have a fresh start to do things differently, because when she was a teenager, she was a geek.

I analysed this extract in terms of camera shots, angles and composition, Mise-en-scene, Sound & Lighting.



In this extract, the introduction shot is of an extreme wide shot, we see a sports ground, where a baseball game is taking place because we see the supporters at a distance. The director uses this shot to show where the scene is taking place, and what the audience can expect from this scene. This is used for effect because the audience feel as though they have front row seats to the game itself, it also shows the different personalities in the high school itself, because we see the 'jocks' in action, this builds a cheery atmosphere amongst the supporters, this also rubs off on the audience watching the extract. Shortly after, the camera starts to tilt (up to down) as it focuses on the back of a female which casts a shadow, as she's standing alone watching from the sidelines. The director uses this for effect to show that she is an unhappy loner, this makes the audience feel sorry for her, as they ask themselves the question of, why is she alone? A little later, the camera begins to pan across the thousands of fans attending the game. The director uses this in order to show us the crowd, as they get excited to watch the game. The audience get a sense of excitement as the tension begins to build.

The location seems to be Chicago, where, the majority of the scenes take place in a journalism office where the main character works, but the beginning scene was at a baseball match, in what looks like a school. Another mini-scene occurs at her house, in the living room. Whereas the last scene takes place in a meeting room in the Chicago Times building. The costumes used in the extract are smart clothing, because it's an office job, therefore they needed to dress smartly, males would wear suits, whereas, females would wear skirts, tops and blazers. They wear those types of clothing because they are workers in a very posh journalism company, so the staffs need to represent this (verisimilitude.) The props used in this extract are, filing cabinets, computers, folders and desks filled with papers, this symbolizes verisimilitude, because those are the normal conditions when working in an office. Also, we see the game-score board to show the amount of time left for the game. The opening sequence used this type of mise-en-scene to show the audience where the film is going to take place, and what type of film it's going to be. It can also be for entertainment purposes and verisimilitude of what a journalist undergoes in order to be successful.

Lighting:
* Bright, natural light used in the majority of the scenes.
* Dark lighting used when introducing the main character. At the start of the scene.

Diagetic Sound:
*Crowd Noise in the game scene.
* Dialogue - conversations between characters.
* Voice-over - of the main character informing us (the audience) about herself.
*Phones ringing in the office.

Non Diagetic Sounds:
* The opening credits begin with a song called "Catch a falling star" this gets the audience in the mood, this carries on until it begins to fade into the background, when the girl (main character) comes into focus.
* Drumming beat begins when the main character and her boss are talking about the deadline for the report which he expects her to complete. This stops when camera turns its focus onto a colleague which has a cup of tea/coffee in his hand, giving a very sarcastic expression.
* A sad and slow song starts to play when the main character and a colleague are eating in the cafeteria, as she talks about her fear of being fired. It sets the atmosphere. This makes the audience feel down, and they begin to sympathise with her feelings.
* The scene where she is at her house, the song choice changes to "People say I’m crazy", this song stops the moment where there is a meeting room scene, where the boss slams the walking stick on the desk in order to get the attention of the employees.
* In the last scene there is an upbeat tune, which makes the atmosphere feel erratic and fast paced. This makes the audience feel as though they are hanging off the edge of their seats.

I have learnt how to broaden my analysis skills, although I did not see anything that we could use in our film idea, because it was targeted at an older audience I thought, because she was in a working job but she goes back to school for a while just to do a report. So the only thing we might use is the fact that most of the film will be shot at school, the rest would have to be shot at Adnan's house in order to fit into what we are doing. But overall, it was a good opening sequance to analyse.

P. Task



An Ali, Adnan, Ziad & Miami preliminary task...

The synopsis of this preliminary task is of a basketball coach asking one of his team members for a chat, where-in-which he tells him to start playing basketball to his standards as he has started to slack.

We used an obvious two shot which indicates their relation.

But on analysis of this preliminary task we found the following shots:

1. Mid-Two Shot of Ziad & Ali, to show that they are friends.

2. A Long Shot of Ali walking towards the hall, where he will meet with the basketball coach.

3. Match-On-Action of Ali as he opens the door to see his basketball coach.

4. Extreme Long Shot of Adnan shooting some hoops, as he awaits his team-member for a quick chat.

5. Over The Shoulder Shot as they meet.

6. Extreme Long Shot of Adnan opening the door. (Over the shoulder shot)

7. Shot Reverse Shot of Adnan and Ali talking about the last game where they lost.

8. Reaction Shot of Adnan after Ali says he does not 'care'...

* These were the shots expected of us in order to fulfill the tasks requirements.
The disadvantage to our preliminary task was that we did not use the rule of thirds appropriately, because if we look at the footage again we will see the green curtain in main focus whilst Ali is talking to Adnan. We have learnt from this mistake and we will ensure that it does not happen in the real Opening sequence.
